Lighting with the Blender 3 Light LED Kit
The concept of 3 point lighting is one of the first that anyone in film or TV production classes learns. It has a lot of benefits, as well as versatility in its approach to the talking head interview or still portrait session. By seperating the lighting plot out to 3 elements: key, fill and background/hair, you gain the ability to alter one aspect without affecting the other 2. You can take the fill light up or down in level without changing the level of the key light or the hair light. It is a technique sometimes referred to as Zone Lighting. Each segment of the lighting is its own zone.

In run & gun video production, you are often lighting in locations you have no advance knowledge of. Are there windows? Are there room lights? If so, are they tungsten? Household fluorescent? It can be nervewracking going into a shoot, not knowing these answers and yet being expected to have a professional looking lighting setup ready to go in short order.
Luckily todays cameras can get a properly exposed image in lower light conditions. Instead of lighting the entire set, you can begin with the ambient light as it exists, and then add just what you need to visually set the mood of your production, lead the viewers eye to the subject, while you make them look good.

This video demonstration will acquaint you with the Lowel Blender 3 Light LED Kit, which is a good choice for location 3 light setups. This is partially because its compact, powerful and can use DC power connections, but also because each light has the color ability to output all daylight, all tungsten or any combination of the 2 colors. Your choice - match the room perfectly or create a contrasting look to help your subject stand out from the location.

Blender 3 Point Lighting, Creative Options
While the video above shows the options for lighting with full daylight or tungsten color output, that is just the beginning of Blender's creative options. Many locations with multiple ambient light sources will have a resultant mix of their colors in the middle of the room. A more singular color average, as window daylight mixes with room tungsten and household fluorescent colors.

In the room setting above, our model Marie was bathed in daylight from the full length windows, and tungsten from room lights. There was technically enough light to create an image, but it didnt separate her from the background, or create the enhanced mood we wanted. We added 3 Blenders.
Blenders ability to mix its daylight and tungsten color LEDs gives you the option to work in the middle ground between these colors, an approach that was much more difficult when working with traditional daylight or tungsten sources. The below example shows how the Blender 3 Light LED Kit was used in a mixed source location. In that setting each Blender was set to a different color mix.

Note the position of the camera. The Blenders were set in a conventional 3 point lighting arrangement. We wanted a hard daylight key to reinforce the daylight dominance of the large windows, with fill light that was a mix of daylight and tungsten, and a tungsten color hair light.

We created a hard daylight key using a Blender with full daylight color, and no diffuser, to replicate the strong window light.

Then a 2nd Blender with full tungsten color and the frost diffuser was placed behind her as a hair light, near the tungsten desk lamp. It gave a warm back-lighting to her hair and shoulders, reinforcing the reality of the room.

Then the 3rd Blender next to the camera was used as a fill-light, with an mix of day & tungsten color and the 'cracked ice' diffuser, to give her frontal fill that was a logical mix of the 2 colors as would be found in the middle of such a room.

Our results were very realistic, and the best part was we lit it all in about 10 minutes.
Each Blender comes with 3 front diffusers. Because LEDs are such focused point sources, some level of diffusion can help soften their output and reduce the multi-shadow effect.
Frost Diffuser: most even output.
Cracked Ice Diffuser: Uneven but realistic
Prismatic Diffuser: Slightly wider spread.
